Many first-time leather sofa buyes are immediately attracted to the Ektorp from Ikea – and for good reason. Not only is it reasonably priced, but it is quite attractive as well.

But is the Ektorp leather sofa really all that good? We decided to take a closer look at the Ektorp to see if this is a worthy purchase or a complete waste of money.

Ektorp Leather Sofa: Is It A Good Sofa?

To begin, let’s go over some of the key attributes of the Ektorp. From the Ikea website, we see that the leather Ektorp features:

• Seat surfaces and armrests in soft, hardwearing, easy care grain leather; practical for families with children
• Seat cushions filled with high-resilient foam and polyester fibers provide great seating comfort
• Back cushions filled with polyester fibers for soft comfort

Here are the measurements:

• Height: 34 5/8 "
• Seat depth: 21 1/4 "
• Seat height: 17 3/4 "

And here they are again, this time in metric:

The first thing you need to make sure is that it will fit inside your doorway. Measure you doorway and determine if the Ektorp you want will fit through. You also need to consider the angle of any stairway to see if the Ektorp can be manuvered into your home, and ultimately, your living room.

The Ektorp is made from top-grain leather that has been dyed-through. It is treated to be not only soft, but easy to care for. Ikea states that it can be cleaned merely by vacuuming, but suggest to keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent cracking (a good tip). Of course, proper leather conditioning and care can extend the life of your Ektorp for many years.

The seat cushions use foam and polyester fibers, which makes the Ektorp quite comfortable to sit on for extended period. The back cushions are filled with polyester.

Of course, you can pair Ektorp with other pieces from the Ektorp line and be reasonably confident that they will look good together (one of the best reasons to buy Ikea furniture, in my opinion). The leather Ektorp also complies with California TB117 flammability requirements, so it should not be a fire hazard.

The constuction felt solid and it was quite comfortable, too. Best of all, the Ektorp is covered by a 10-year Ikea warranty, which frames and cushions against defects in materials and workmanship.

Overall, we felt that it was a great starter leather sofa for new families who want to bring the comfort and look of leather into their living rooms at a reasonable price.

Problems With Ektorp Leather Sofa From Ikea

So are there any problems with the Ektorp? Unlike their cloth versions, the covers are not removable, which means caring for the Ektorp will not be as easy as removing the covers and throwing them in the wash. Of course, you really can’t do that with ANY leather sofa, so if you have small children or pets, you may want to consider the cloth version of the Ektorp.

Another question we hear a lot is: "Ektorp leather sofa: is the leather a good leather?" Well, we have to admit that at this price, the leather isn’t going to be the absolute best quality, but honestly we’ve seen a lot worse. As a starter leather sofa, you probably won’t be disappointed.

Also, the leather Ektorp is not available for sale online at the Ikea store for some reason, but fortunately you can find one at a steep discount by going over to eBay and performing a simple search on the Ektorp (it’s funny how Ikea isn’t really the best place to buy one).
